O Lord our Governor, whose glory is in all the world: We commend this nation to your merciful care.
God, we come to you today and plead your mercy. We lament the arrogance that keeps us blind to injustice and allows hatred to flourish unchecked.
That, being guided by your Providence, we may dwell secure in your peace.
“Peace” seems so far away, God. You promised us your peace, but often we find ourselves wondering where that peace is…where you are. Forgive us our doubt, Lord. Forgive us for thinking that you would, even for a moment, ever leave our side.
Grant to the President of the United States wisdom and strength to know and to do your will.
You tell us in your Word that the wisdom of this world is foolishness to you. Shake us free of all earthly wisdom that keeps us from seeing the true wisdom that only you author. Imbue our new president with supernatural grace. You are our true ruler, Lord; remind us in our most hopeless moments that you alone are our hope.
Fill him with the love of truth and righteousness, and make him ever mindful of his calling to serve this people in your fear.
When “truth” isn’t even acknowledged, much less loved; Lord, intervene. When “righteousness” becomes a hurtful word co-opted by those who would seek to shame your children; Lord, intervene. When “calling” is subsumed in a quest for personal power; Lord, intervene.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end.
We commend this nation, its people, and its rulers to you, Lord. They have always been yours, and always will be. Help us to rest in the promise of your unshakable love.
