Church + Gracious Spirit of God = Hope

When I look at the church, what gives me hope?

When I look at the church, I see a people striving in the Spirit to love God and neighbor in faithful effective ways. We often don’t get it right, but my hope lies in the longsuffering of God who extends transforming grace to us all. My hope is in the God who believes in us! My hope is in the God whose liberating word goes out in, through, and in spite of us.

Service starts at 11:00 am at St. John’s Missionary Baptist Church. In eight months, Leah and I have never yet been on time. When we chain our bikes to the handrail on the handicap ramp, I can hear the hum of the electric organ and the pulse of hands clapping.

Church + Boldness = Hope

By Bridget Eileen Rivera

When I look at the church, what gives me hope?

When I look at the church, I see women stepping up as leaders and holding their brothers to account; I see people of color reminding the world of God’s justice and calling the church to repentance; I see queer people persevering in the faith and living in the safety of God’s love; and I see a global body of Christ that is so much bigger than Western culture.
